Marketed as a cheap, fun, unique hot hatch, created at the turn of the century as a way to revitalize retro design with contemporary features. It sold very well in the USA, selling around 1,000,000 units over its ten year lifespan. It did well in Canada, but not nearly as well in Europe, where it's fairly rare.

@trevor21 I bought two P/T Cruisers GT Turbos the moment they hit the dealership, one for work and the other for serious tuning and racing. I had the GT Turbo in both of them, but I took it a step further with one by installing a high-performance ECU that boosted the power from 215 hp to an impressive 270 hp, all thanks to the DiabloSport inTune i3 handheld device. I also upgraded to a stage 3 hardened clutch and tuned the transmission to effectively manage the extra torque.To elevate performance even more, I swapped the factory turbo for a BorgWarner S256 turbo kit. After completing these modifications, I tested the car on a dynamometer and achieved an astounding 340 horsepower from a mid-weight vehicle of about 3,200 pounds.My sleeper P/T Cruiser consistently surprises everyone with its exceptional speed. To handle the increased stress from these upgrades, I proactively upgraded the suspension bushings, wheel bearings, and motor mounts. I also equipped it with Bridgestone Turanza QuietTrack ultra-high-performance tires, delivering superior ride quality and handling.While the internals can easily handle up to 450 hp, stepping up to 500 hp would require further enhancements, like stronger crankshafts and pistons, among other modifications.
