Description
Any forest or shrub can ignite, fire spreads to nearby vegetation over time, and there is a wind setting that will bias the direction and strength. Flames go from a small trunk flame to fully engulfing the tree, and recede back down as fires are drowned or burn out.
Features
- Visible fires at any distance: nearby fires render individually, while distant ones merge into larger cluster flames.
- Dynamic smoke and atmosphere: thick black volume-based smoke rises and drifts, glowing embers swirl through smoke columns, and a red wildfire haze appears near flames.
- Environmental impact: forest is thinned out after a fire (roughly 1 in 3 burnt trees destroyed), remaining trees are charred black, shrubs/grass burn away completely, and dark patches are left on the ground.
- Optimized performance: everything renders in one HLSL post effect pass with no particle systems. The 48 most relevant flames and scorch marks are sent to the graphics card each frame with smooth distance fading, ensuring a very unnoticeable effect on performance.
