Description
This mod adds variable versions of BeamNG’s brake pads, allowing you to tune brake torque and disc cooling directly in the parts and tuning menu.
Features
- Front Disc Cooling: Controls how quickly the front brake discs cool down. Higher values help reduce overheating under heavy braking.
- Rear Disc Cooling: Controls how quickly the rear brake discs cool down. Higher values help reduce overheating under heavy braking.
- Front Disc Strength: Controls front brake torque in Nm.
- Rear Disc Strength: Controls rear brake torque in Nm.
- Rear Rear Disc Strength: For vehicles with an extra rear axle, this controls that axle’s brake torque in Nm.
- Rear Handbrake Strength: Controls rear handbrake torque.
- Rear Rear Handbrake Strength: For vehicles with an extra rear handbrake axle, this controls that axle’s handbrake torque.
- Brake Bias Behavior: If the vehicle uses built-in brake bias, effective bias with this mod is determined by the relationship between the front and rear brake torque settings.
Important Notes
- Brake torque is now capped automatically by vehicle weight class.
- Brake strength sliders display values in Nm.
- Freshly installed variable pads default to 50% of that vehicle’s allowed maximum brake torque.
- Disc cooling defaults to 50%.
- Vehicles with additional rear brake axles are supported where separate brake pad slots exist.
- Very high brake torque can still cause poor braking performance if the vehicle does not have enough tire grip.
How It Works
This mod uses a custom Lua controller to detect vehicle weight and assign a matching brake torque limit. Instead of every vehicle having access to the same extreme brake values, each vehicle gets a tuning range that better suits its size and mass.
That means:
- Lighter vehicles get lower maximum brake torque
- Heavier vehicles get higher maximum brake torque
- The tuning menu stays useful without allowing obviously broken values
