Following Aston Martin's racing endeavors as an engine supplier for Nimrod Racing and EMKA Racing in the early 1980s, the company chose to build its own vehicle for the World Sports Prototype Championship. Thus, in late 1987, Peter Livanos, Victor Gauntlett, Richard Williams, and Ray Mallock created a partnership via his stake in Scottish racing outfit Ecurie Ecosse to form Proteus Technology Ltd. (Protech). The team would create and manage the AMR1 project, participating for the first time in the 1989 season.
