The term “CSL” in BMW history stands for Coupé Sport Leichtbau (Coupé, Sport, Lightweight). It was only ever applied to coupé models, such as the E9 3.0 CSL, the E46 M3 CSL, and the modern M4 CSL.
Because the E28 is a sedan, it could never officially carry the CSL badge. Instead, BMW Motorsport simply referred to lightweight or racing-prepared E28s according to the racing category — for example Group A E28 528i/535i, or in some cases as BMW Motorsport lightweight conversions.
If BMW had created an official lightweight sedan counterpart, the most logical naming convention would have been something like “SSL” (Sedan Sport Leichtbau), but no such designation was ever used in reality.
In short:
CSL = only coupés
E28 M5 lightweight/race versions = Motorsport Group A builds, not CSL
A hypothetical name could be SSL, but it’s not historically authentic
