The Ford Torino is a vehicle manufactured by Ford for the North American market between 1968 and 1976. It competed in the middle market area. The automobile was called after Turin (Torino in Italian), which is known as "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was originally an expensive version of Ford's intermediate- sized Fairlane, which was built from 1955 until 1970. After 1968, the Fairlane brand was reserved for basic vehicles with fewer levels of trim than those using the Torino moniker. During this period, the Torino was considered a subseries of the Fairlane. By 1970, the Torino had become Ford's flagship intermediate moniker, with the Fairlane serving as a subseries. In 1971, the Fairlane moniker was discarded completely, and all Ford intermediates were renamed Torino. This was one of numerous names offered for the Mustang during development. The Torino was virtually a twin of the Mercury Montego series.
