Ford's Mk IV GT40 is widely regarded as the most important post- war American race vehicle ever created, and it is a true racing classic. It was the most advanced version of the GT40 platform, and it took on Ferrari, dominating a field that featured the Ferrari 330 PF, the Chaparral 2F, and its predecessors, the GT40 Mk I and Mk IIB. As history would show, the Mk IV was only raced in two events: the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring, where Mario Andretti and Bruce McLaren won, and the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt outperformed everyone to the checkered flag and won the Index of Performance for most efficient car. That is the only all- American outright victory in the legendary Le Mans 24- hour endurance event, with an American- built chassis, engine, crew, and drivers. Due to the Mk IV's exceptional performance, the FIA rapidly doomed it to racing extinction by prohibiting any prototype vehicle with engines bigger than three liters.
