The Mercedes- Benz 300 SLR (W 196 S) was a two- seat sports racer that competed in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship before a devastating collision and fire at Le Mans later that year ended its reign prematurely. The automobile was given the designation "SL- R" (for Sport Leicht- Rennen, or Sport Light- Racing), which was eventually abbreviated to "SLR". The W 196 S is based on the W 196 R, but has a slightly different engine with a displacement of 3 liters.
