Power/Torque Curve

For the 1956 season, the substantially better 550A/1500RS was released. In the United States, it is known as the '550 RS', and although it looks identical to the 550 spyder, the chassis below is totally new. The previous Spyder's ladder chassis was removed, and it was replaced with a tube frame construction that significantly reduced torsional flexibility. At the same time, the rear suspension was entirely overhauled; although it remained a swing arm design, an anti- roll device was introduced to improve the rear end's traction while cornering. Finally, the 4- cam engines' performance was greatly improved with crankshaft mounted distributors, better compression, and new Weber carburetors, resulting in 23 more horsepower than the original 547 engine.
The 550As came equipped with the freshly introduced five- speed transmission, which had a low first gear for faster starts.
