Porsche Motorsports produced 17 copies of the 924 GTR. Al Holbert followed, producing six 924 GTRs using bodywork and racing components provided by Porsche Motorsports Factory. Holbert's GTRs were serious racing vehicles that competed in the IMSA and Trans Am championships. The new vehicle was given the name Carrera GTR to differentiate it from the cars that competed at Le Mans in 1980. It used all of the lessons learnt and included the most powerful 924 engine. Amazingly, the factory 924 Turbo light- alloy propshaft delivered all of the GTR's 375 horsepower from the clutch to the transaxle.
