Track Background:
The Gelsenkirchen Motodrome, also known as "Almaring," was a motorsport circuit located in the Ückendorf district of Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Established in 1969 by the Rheinländische Autorenn-Gemeinschaft (RAG) under Anton Brenner's leadership, it was built on the site of the former Alma coking plant.
The track spanned roughly 0.75 km (0.47 miles) and featured five corners, accommodating up to 2,000 spectators. It hosted a variety of events, including autocross, motorcycle races, and car circuit competitions.
The Motodrome shut down after the 1984 season due to increasing noise complaints from nearby residents. Frequent weekend races and the use of loudspeakers led to disturbances, eventually sparking protests over noise pollution.
It’s a shame this track had to close — it’s a beautiful circuit, and most importantly, incredibly fun to drive!
