This mod adds a basic gradient and custom pearlescent paint system for BeamNG.
The effect is created using custom colour palette textures with hand-built mipmaps, allowing the paint to shift color based on camera distance and viewing angle.
The 2 pearlescent paint uses multiple colour layers, all fullycolourable in the vehicle configuration menu.
Results vary by vehicle - smoother body shapes show clean colour flow, while low-poly or sharply segmented panels can reveal underlying mesh faces.
The Two Skins
Normal mode
How it worksBeamNG normally uses mipmaps as lower-resolution copies of a texture for distant rendering.
In this way, the mipmaps are custom-authored instead of downscaled copies.
As the camera distance changes, the shader automatically samples different mip levels. Because each mip level contains a different colour pattern, the paint appears to change colour with distance and angle — creating the pearlescent / iridescent effect.
Wanna make your own? Below are the mipmap specs which ive made for this mod.

The Two Skins
Normal mode
- Shows full multi-colour pearlescent effect at normal camera distance
- Gradually simplifies to a single dominant colour at long distance
- Continues cycling multiple colours even at long distance
- Produces a stronger “endless flip” effect when driving away

Normal Pearlescent - Configuration
- Type: colorPaletteMap
- Format: BC7_UNORM DDS (DX10 header)
- Resolution: 4096×4096
- Mipmaps: 13 custom mip levels
- Purpose: Primary hue-shift / iridescent gradient lookup
- Behavior:
- Top mip = full multi-colour gradient
- Lower mips progressively simplify the gradient
- Shader samples different mip levels based on view distance
- Result: colour shift changes with distance and angle
- Type: colorPaletteMap
- Format: BC7_UNORM DDS (DX10 header)
- Resolution: 4096×4096
- Mipmaps: 13 custom mip levels
- Purpose: Secondary palette control / region mask
- Behavior:
- Controls how multiple paint layers blend
- Works together with prismatic.color
- Ensures consistent colour regions across the vehicle
- Also participates in the mip-driven colour change
