Big Update for Skeleton Coast!
Whats new?
Bugfixes and various:
note: the new additions resulted in a slightly larger filesize, I try to keep it as low as possible still.
Whats new?
- complete rework of the bay between the beach hotel and diaz cross
- the new town "Horseshoe Bay", lies in the natural harbor of the same name, the town is most known for its local fishing industry.
- Horseshoe Bay airstrip. An unpaved airstrip close to the town with 2 hangars.
- Horseshoe Bay Dirt Racing circuit. A rallycross/dirt racing track next to the airfield.
- Vogelsang Bay Hospital. The map lacked a hospital for the area. That was fixed. Also new signs on the districts main police station and municipality.
- A much larger/wider map background. Not good for driving but it will give much more space and landscape for flying.
- complete rework of the road layout in parts of Vogelsangbay. Roads now have different parking spots and up to 3 lanes to make them narrower and less Forza-ish.
- Tower of the "Woermann building" (the one with the white/yellow tower in Vogelsangbay) is now enterable on foot to enjoy a good view over the town.
- New entry/exit for the port to accomodate larger trailers.
Bugfixes and various:
- higher speedlimit / faster driving npc´s on main highway
- fixed "jittering" curbs in Vogelsangbay
- some asset optimization
- fixed weird "holes" in the normal texture of the background
- fixed many stretched road decals
- better decal fading on many places
- added more dirty and graffiti textures on different areas
- added 2 EV chargers
- added some trafficsigns where they were missing
- some floating assets and bushes fixed
- some optimizing on ai roads and speed limits
note: the new additions resulted in a slightly larger filesize, I try to keep it as low as possible still.
THIS IS THE ONLY OFFICIAL POST FOR THIS MAP.
EVERY OTHER IS A REPOST AND WILL GET YOU A VIRUS.

The Skeleton Coast is a remote stretch of coast in south-western Africa where the Namib desert meets the Atlantic ocean. Its name derives from the many skeletal remains of marine animals and the wrecks of countless ships that ran aground on its hundreds kilometres of shoreline. Despite its eerie nature as one of the harshest environments on earth, the skeleton coast is home to a diverse fauna, including seals, penguins, desert adapted elephants and unique plants. This makes it a worthwile destination for adventurers, nature enthusiasts and offroaders. Most probably know this place from the "Beach Buggy Boys" Grand Tour special.
What is this map for?
This map was designed with the main focus on exploration, highway driving, transportation/trucking and offroading aswell as creating a semi realistic environment. This is the reason there are no racetracks, big jumps, derby arenas and similar stuff on this map.
Main features:
- 8x8km basemap size
- 70km long highway through the desert that leads outside the basemap boundaries (see description below)
- Several towns and settlements
- desert, sand dunes, mountains, bushland, beaches with many miles of unpaved roads and trails
- dozens of custom buildings and objects specifically made for this map
- map comes with its own set of skins, license plates and vehicle configs (made by Thom6502)
- lots of stuff for transportation and roleplaying including shops, industries, mining, farms, logistics and tourism facilities
- Locations only accessible on foot, like building interiors, mineshafts and caves
- an island off the coast you can only reach by boat
Map Size
There is the base map, which is 8x8km. However, the drivable area is much larger than this, see >map extension [/SPOILER]
Map Extension/Highway
Outside of the base map there is a large, drivable map background. Compare this to the highway and saltpan on Johnson Valley. A terrain which has far lower details but is a lot larger. In this case 60x15km, which adds up to an area of 900km². There is a highway going through this terrain which connects to a small town at the end of it. The distance between the 2 main towns on the map, one being at the coast, the other being in the backcountry, is over 70km, which makes this one of the longest point A to point B trips in BeamNG. However, the terrain only serves as a background for the highway and is not really meant to be driven on (although possible).
Lore and Background
In the early 20th century, skeleton coast became a hotspot for mining activities after diamonds where discovered there. Still to this day the area holds some of the largest diamond deposits in the world. This lead to the development of the area by european colonists, mostly german, british, portuguese and dutch. Today the area is still a mining hotspot but there has also been a shift towards tourism as for the remote and special landscape aswell as colonial towns of the area.
The map is a mashup of several real places in Namibia, South Africa and Angola. I tried to incorporate most of the features of the real landscape in a more condensed setting. Notable influences/references are Lüderitz, Swakopmund, Walvisbay, a bit of Capetown, Keetmanshoop, Hondeklip Bay, Kolmanskop, Mercury Island, Elisabethbay, Sao Martinho dos Tigres, Moçâmedes.
Known Bugs and Issues
- Map is in many areas not as detailed as others. Its always map size vs detail density. This is a large map. Basemap is 8x8km, which is double the size of Italy.
- Airport landing strip in Otjovasando has wrong ground properties (dirt instead of asphalt). Its a “true” bug. I can´t fix it. Deal with it I guess.
- “shivering” ground textures the further away from the basemap. Mostly recognizable in Otjovasando. Has something to do with the game engine, I can´t do anything about it. Just ignore it.
- Some textures on top of objects in the map extension. Also mostly recognizable in Otjovasando. Reason is that the ground in this area is an object itself, so the game cannot distinguish between the ground and anything that stands on top of it.
- Small objects with weird collision. Mostly vanilla objects. Benches, postboxes, signs etc partially have no collision.
- Map view looks weird because the map is not a square shape and the camera automatically jumps to the “center” of the map which is somewhere in the desert.
If you find any more bugs and problems, please report them in the mods discussion page, not in the reviews.
System Requirements
This is a very performance heavy map due to its size. It is not going to run well on low end pcs. If you run it on the recommended requirements for BeamNG its totally fine, just be aware that the minimum requirements might not be sufficient to have decent fps on this map.
Why is this map LHD traffic when real Namibia & South Africa are RHD traffic?
I decided to make this map LHD simply because there are barely any RHD vehicles in BeamNG and I thought it would be too annoying to sit on the wrong side of almost every car in the game. Thats why traffic drives on the right side of the road.
Special Thanks To
Barbent Servo GT - for the patience and irreplacable help along the whole project
Thom6502 - for creating the awesome skins for this project aswell as license plates and tedious beta testing
Megaknight - for writing the LUA code for the landmarks
This map was originally considered to be a paid mod. In the end I decided to make it free so more people can enjoy it. However it took me well over a thousand hours over the course of 2 years in total to make it, all things included.
If you like the map and are feeling generous, I will be very grateful to receive any donations.
