Changelog

latest Version 2.0 · A playlist wheel, a parking sensor, and music that breaks with the car · BeamNG.drive 0.40.x 2 days ago

Restart the game once after updating. BeamNG keeps Lua it has already loaded, so until you restart you are running the new interface on the old code, and a control can be missing or throw an error that has nothing to do with your install.

New: the playlist wheel. Hold Shift + T, or LB and D-pad left on a pad, and your playlists sit in a ring round the screen. Point at one with the right stick or the mouse and let go to switch to it. The mouse wheel steps round the ring too, and Off is on it for silence. Tap the key instead of holding it and the wheel stays up until you press it again. As in the game's own radial menu, time nearly stops while it is up, so you can pick one in the middle of a corner. Both keys can be changed in Options under Controls (type roadwave in the search box).

A burst of static when you switch. The wheel and the playlist keys tune over with a short crackle, as loud as the music. Static in the gear panel's Play row turns it off.

New: parking sensor. Reverse slowly toward a wall or another car and the car beeps from 1.5 m, faster as it gets nearer and steady under 30 cm. The beep is the car's own, so muting the music or turning it down leaves it alone. In the gear panel's Car row, Parking sensor: Newer cars beeps in cars the game dates 2005 or later (and in cars it gives no year), All cars beeps in every car, and Off is off.

New: Damage. The car radio now breaks with the car. After a hard crash it cuts out, and in a wreck it goes dead until you reset the car. It is on by default, and Damage sits beside Speed in the gear panel's Sound row if you would rather keep your music whatever you hit.

New: hide the Browser. The gear panel's Browser row has Hide, for driving with the in-car player or the keys alone. Shift + J brings it back.

I make Roadwave on my own and cannot test every car out there, so if something does not work in yours, please tell me which car, in the forum thread or by private message, whichever you prefer. I add and test cars as the reports come in.

Thank you to everyone who wrote something. What you were driving, what happened instead of what you expected, and your beamng.log if something went wrong - that is still where the next update comes from, and feature ideas are just as welcome as bug reports. No idea is too small. The discussion thread on the forum is the best place for either, or a private message on BeamNG or [email protected] if you would rather not post a log in public.

No music files? Roadwave Advanced, an optional paid add-on, plays Spotify, YouTube or any player on your PC through the car, with the playlist controls right in the game. Internet radio too: roadwavemod.github.io/beamng

Restart the game once after updating. BeamNG keeps Lua it has already loaded, so until you restart you are running the new interface on the old code, and a control can be missing or throw an error that has nothing to do with your install.

New: the in-car player has been redesigned. Dark glass in a rounded body, with the Roadwave name on the chin the way a head unit carries its brand. The glass has a reflection that slides as your head moves, so it reads as a screen in the car rather than a sticker on the windshield. Every control is still on it, the volume included, and the place you gave it in each car is kept.

New: 1-DIN or 2-DIN, per car. Open the gear panel and press Format on the new Player row. 2-DIN is the screen you know; 1-DIN is a slim unit for cars where a tall screen covers too much of the road. Each car remembers its own, so a truck can have the slim one and your hatchback the big one.

New: choose the reflection. Reflection on the same row: Soft is a broad, faint band and the default, Full adds a narrow streak beside it, and Off takes it away if you read it as glare.

New: open doors let the music out. With 3D on, open a door and the music outside the car gets clearer; close it and the cabin muffles it again. Every open door opens it a little more. Works on any car with opening doors, modded ones included.

New: outside volume and muffle amount. Two buttons in the gear panel, on the Outside row. Outside sets how loud the music is with the camera outside the car (100, 75, 50 or 25 percent); inside the cabin nothing changes. Muffle sets how muffled it sounds from outside: Light, Normal or Heavy. Normal and 100 percent are the sound you had before.

New: Cyrillic on the in-car player. Track and playlist names in Cyrillic show on the player instead of question marks.

Fixed: the player's edges shimmered with TAA Standalone. That mod nudges the camera a fraction of a pixel every frame, and the in-car player followed the nudge. It now stays still with the mod on.

Changed: the music keeps going. When a playlist ends with Repeat off, the next playlist starts, and after the last one it goes back to the first. Repeat all still plays one playlist over and over.

Changed: the gear panel. One row per subject, so it no longer wraps into a mess at smaller sizes: Play, Outside, Sound, Display, and Player for the in-car player's look.

New: your first playlist, no path to type and no restart. Roadwave now makes its music folder itself. Open the Roadwave Browser with no music in it and press Open music folder: Explorer opens in the right place. Make a folder for your playlist, copy your music in, press Rescan, and it plays. The restart that the first folder always needed is gone. If music sits one folder too high, in the outer rw_music, the browser says so.

An open car sounds open, and a crash opens the cabin

Restart the game once after updating. BeamNG keeps Lua it has already loaded, so until you restart you are running the new interface on the old code, and a control can be missing or throw an error that has nothing to do with your install.

New: an open car sounds open. Heard from outside, the music used to be muffled as if every vehicle had a roof and doors, including a roadster with the top down, an ATV and a motorcycle. Roadwave now measures how closed the cabin is from the vehicle's own body, once per car and again when you change parts, and an open one lets the music out. A crash counts too: every broken side or rear window lets a little more of it out, tearing the doors or the roof off opens the cabin up, and a reset closes it again. A closed car sounds exactly as it did. Sitting in the driver's seat, nothing changed.

New: the music can rise with speed. Switch on Speed in the gear panel and the music comes up as the car goes faster, over the engine, tyre and wind noise the game makes: a little at 60 km/h, 4 dB from 130. It eases in and out over a second, so braking is a fade and not a step. Off unless you turn it on.

Changed: one collapse, and it is a small player. The browser collapses to a single line with the track name, previous, play and next, the volume and a gear. Shuffle, Repeat and every sound and display setting live behind the gear now, in one panel that stays open while you set several things. The collapsed bar no longer wraps onto a second line, even on a narrow app.

Changed: the browser goes smaller. The size setting in the gear panel now goes down to 50%, where it used to stop at 80%.

New: move within a track from the browser. A thin line along the bottom of the browser shows where the track is. Click or drag it to jump.

New: the scrolling name can loop. A long track name scrolls back and forth as before, or, with Scroll set to Loop in the gear panel, runs to the end and starts again. It applies to the browser, the HUD player and the in-car player alike.

Fixed: Rescan no longer stops the music. Pressing it after adding a playlist used to stop and reset whatever was playing. The track now carries on, unless its file or its playlist is gone.

Fixed: the in-car player shows with a modded interior camera. It used to draw itself only while the game's own driver camera was active, recognised by its name, so an interior camera mod like Enhanced Interior Camera left it hidden. It now looks at where the camera is: inside the cabin, it draws.

Thank you to everyone who wrote something. What you were driving, what happened instead of what you expected, and your beamng.log if something went wrong - that is still where the next update comes from, and feature ideas are just as welcome as bug reports. No idea is too small. The discussion thread on the forum is the best place for either.

- Fixed: the music no longer leans to the right in the driver's seat. The game places a car's centre point on a floor node on its right-hand side, and the 3D audio used that point, so in almost every car the cabin sounded shifted towards the passenger. Inside the car the music now comes from the middle. Outside, nothing changed.

- New: a balance control. L, Bal and R in the browser's bottom row, ten steps each way. The middle button shows where it is set and puts it back in the centre. It turns the far side down rather than moving the sound across, the way a car's head unit does, and it is saved.

- Changed: the browser's bottom row keeps related buttons together. On a narrower app the buttons used to break onto a second line wherever they ran out of room, so L could end up on one line and R on the next. They now wrap in groups, and collapsed, the controls start right after the title instead of leaving the title alone on its own bar. A long track name there scrolls, the way it does in the HUD player. The Roadwave logo is now beside the name in the browser, the HUD player and on the in-car player.

- Changed: a folder the game refuses is now named in beamng.log. Two dots in a row anywhere in a folder or file name - an album called "...And Justice For All", say - is a path BeamNG will not play. Those tracks used to show up and then play nothing. Now they are left out, and the log says which folder and that renaming it fixes it.
Restart the game once after updating. BeamNG keeps Lua it has already loaded, so until you restart you are running the new interface on the old code, and a control can be missing or throw an error that has nothing to do with your install.

Changed: collapsing the browser now has two depths. One chevron still gives you 1.3's collapsed bar, with every control and what's playing on it. Click it again and a second chevron takes you further: just the name, the station and its logo, nothing else - the bare look collapsing had before 1.3. Either one comes back to full size in one click, and whichever depth you left it on is remembered. redstartitan asked for the old look back after 1.3 took every control with it; this keeps both.

Thank you to everyone who wrote something. What you were driving, what happened instead of what you expected, and your beamng.log if something went wrong. That is still where the next update comes from. There is a discussion thread on the forum as well, which is a better place for a suggestion than a review - a review can only be written once per version, and answering one does not reach the person who wrote it.
