First introduced in 1971, the Aria was designed to replace the well-established but outdated Piccolina. The car featured an innovative hatchback chassis with a large rear door instead of a trunk lid and a modern powertrain, where an engine mounted transversely at the front drove the front wheels through an end-mounted gearbox.
With a wide range of powertrains and packages, from the base 1.0-liter Standard model to the sporty 1.5-liter Corse version with twin camshafts, the car instantly captured the supermini market. Although less well known today, it has since firmly established its place in automotive history as a model for modern superminis and a pioneer of the automotive industry like its predecessor.
