The development of Grand Theft Auto 6, without exaggeration the most anticipated game of the decade, turned out to be record expensive. According to the latest financial report of the publisher Take-Two Interactive, the production budget of the new part of GTA has already exceeded $1 billion. Such budgets the game industry has never seen before. So, the yet-to-be-released GTA 6 can rightfully be considered one of the most expensive games in the industry.

The main development phase started in 2020, shortly after the commercial triumph of Red Dead Redemption 2. However, preliminary work on GTA 6 could have been underway since as early as 2018. Take-Two calls the decision to postpone the release “not an easy one.” Company head Strauss Zelnick claims that the extra time is needed for Rockstar to realize its vision without creative compromises.

The game is still expected to be released on May 26, 2026. Zelnick expressed confidence that there will be no new postponements. As for the price - Take-Two emphasizes that it does not intend to target competitors, and there is a possibility that GTA 6 will be the first game with a $100 price tag at launch.

Additionally, the report says that GTA V sales have reached 215 million copies, and the total circulation of the entire series is 450 million. Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed the 74 million copies mark, and the entire franchise has surpassed 100 million. GTA V remains the best-selling game of the last 10 years in the US, both in terms of copies and revenue.

Amidst this news, the new GTA 6 trailer continues to set viewing records, overtaking even Hollywood blockbusters, and confirms the game's status as the premier entertainment release of the coming years.
