Is Rockstar Reinventing Animation for GTA 6?
Take-Two Interactive, owner of Rockstar Games, has registered a new patent indicating major technological changes. They can be used in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. It's about an innovative animation system that can take character behavior to a new level that has never been seen in computer games before.
The patent was filed back in September last year, but was only recently approved. Although the document itself contains a lot of technical details. Its main point is to create a system that allows you to apply the same animation to characters of different physiques. In traditional games, movements are often recorded using motion capture, where one actor plays the role of all characters. But such a scheme limits the variability of movements and does not allow you to take into account the peculiarities of the physique of NPCs or custom characters. Rockstar's new development solves this problem. The system analyzes character parameters - bone length, height, build - and automatically adapts animations. That is, each character will move in its own way, and depending on the context - running down the stairs, sliding on wet asphalt or trying to get into the car after a fight will have different motion animations.
The technologies described in the patent are created specifically for Rockstar's RAGE engine. That means other studios won't be able to copy it for their projects. This also indicates serious preparation for the release of GTA 6, because patents are usually filed at the final stage of development.
Given the previously leaked footage and rumors, we can expect that in GTA 6 we are waiting for a really new stage in the development of animation and interaction with the game world. It seems that Rockstar intends to set the quality standards in the industry again.
However, note that the developers did not mention that it is in Grant Theft Auto 6 that this technology will be used. The company only filed an application for the pant of such technology. But maybe it will be used in other projects of the company. Or still we should wait for such innovations in GTA 6, what do you think?
